Pediatric Services at Tennova Healthcare - Cleveland
Tennova Healthcare - Cleveland provides physical, occupational and speech therapy services for children from birth to 21. We provide children and their families with the tools necessary to help them reach their goals. We begin in the therapy clinic and educate families so that the work in the clinic can continue at home. We believe providing a fun, comfortable atmosphere for learning optimizes the potential to transition new skills to home, school and beyond.
A team of therapists specializes in working with kids who have autism, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, sensory integration disorders (sensitivity to food, light, sound) and more. Combining play with family involvement helps them work towards the best outcome for your child.

What We Offer:
Physical Therapy
Pediatric physical therapy can address the below issues and more. If your child is having trouble in these areas, therapy in our clinic may be right for you.
- Tires more quickly than his/her peers
- Has trouble keeping up with friends in sports or play
- Your pediatrician noted he/she has not yet met gross motor milestones (like walking, crawling, jumping, hopping) that kids in the same age group have met
- They have difficulty with balance causing him/her to fall more than other kids
- You notice signs of muscle weakness or with coordination during movement
- They suffered an injury that isn’t improving
Physical therapists perform individual assessments of children’s strength, range of motion, balance, posture, gross motor skills and more. They will:
- Use standardized methods to compare your child’s performance to his/her peers.
- Create individualized goals to maximize motivation for your child in a way that can be reinforced by your family.
- Make recommendations for or provide orthotics, prosthetics, custom wheelchair assessments and custom car seat assessments.
Occupational Therapy
The team may be able to help if you are noticing your child:
- Experiencing difficulty with fine motor skills like holding objects to write, eat or play
- Avoiding certain types and textures of food
- Unable to use a drinking method appropriate for his or her age (bottle, sippy cup, regular cup)
- Demonstrating too much or too little response to sensation (movement, sound, light, touch)
- Experiencing difficulty engaging in social play with family and peers
- Struggling to focus on tasks at home or school
Occupational therapists assess children individually for ability to participate in daily activities like self-care, play and even school performance. They will:
- Use standardized testing methods help compare your child to peers
- Identify deficits and create goals in collaboration with your child and your family
- Center sessions around play to maximize participation
Our ultimate goal is to help build the physical, cognitive or social skills needed for confidence in daily task performance.
Speech Therapy
If you are noticing your child experiencing some of the below then speech pathologists may be able to help.
- Trouble speaking clearly
- Stumbling over certain sounds, whether in the beginning, middle or end of a word
- Difficulty forming sentences
- Inadequate vocabulary compared to peers
- Struggling to follow simple commands or answer simple questions
- Multi-step commands seem to be a challenge
- Gagging on or have difficulty swallowing food
- Has hearing loss or other issues that make him/her a candidate for a communication device
Speech pathologists work closely with your child but emphasize the carryover of skills to the home environment so that long term gains are made. They use:
- Multiple standardized tests are available to assess skills
- Meaningful goals for play based therapy are created with the help of you and your child
- Structured sessions to promote language development using tools like pictures, books, puzzles and objects
- Language based treatment and swallowing treatment can be provided depending on your child’s deficits
